How to Decorate your Home with Nature

Create a serene oasis in your home by bringing a little of the forest indoors.

As a nature-inspired artist I am always on the search for little treasures every time I step foot into a forest or even just outside for that matter. Whether it is a search for heart shaped stones or the tiniest little flower I can find, I find so much joy + connectedness in the process.

Decorating with nature can be so rewarding and really make you feel more grounded and calm. It can bring a beautifully mysterious element to your home.

So let’s get started on some easy tips on how to add some nature magic to your home interiors.

Collecting beautiful natural objects

The next time you go on a walk or hike, pay attention to little things that catch your eye. I like to focus on stones and rocks in particular as they can really ground your home with calming energy. Sometimes you may also find an interesting stick that resembles something else…. or a nut shell that makes you smile. Pick them up and hold them in your hand and thank them for showing themselves to you.

Remember that it is extremely important for you to never take anything from a designated Nature Preserve. Also, never take any plants unless it is permissible to do so and only take if there are at least 50 others of the same plant where you are standing. The bees, birds, and beings of the forest need these plants and flowers more than we do, so be kind to them and the land.

If you have determined that it is OK to collect the item, always ask permission before leaving with it. You will know if the answer is yes or no. Just listen to your intuition.

Now comes the fun part. Here are some ideas on how you might incorporate the natural world into your home seamlessly.

  • Use stones to hold down a stack of towels. This is functional and also beautiful and always makes me feel more connected to the earth when I enter my bathroom.

  • Make A Stick Centerpiece. Place interesting twigs into a vase and place them on the mantle or tucked away in a little reading nook.

  • Decorate your table centerpiece with branches instead of flowers. Donate those fake plastic plants and replace them with real + beautiful thing. You will not regret it.

  • Make a Nature Tray. I like to find a piece of bark and use it as the “tray”. Sycamore Tree bark is perfect as it sheds its bark each year. Then place little acorn caps, lichens, stones, or anything else you’ve collected onto this tray and put in a place you can enjoy. It looks lovely on a cottage core style coffee table or on book shelf that has some extra space.

  • Hydrangeas Forever. In the Autumn, collecting dried hydrangea heads is a most beautiful way to create a dried floral vase. The earthy tones and airiness of the flowers will create a lot of calm. Place them in an antique lantern like I did in the photo. Shop your local thrift store or antique shop to find the perfect container.

  • Collecting Nature Themed Art

Finally, one of the easiest and most beautiful ways to bring the garden indoors is to find art that emphasizes the use of natural ephemera. Let the artist do the leg work for you and enjoy the beauty of the natural world that has been preserved for you and future generations to enjoy. Pressed flower art is a lovely way to bring the summer garden into your winter evenings or any season.

Who knows, one day a forest may just bloom from one of these works. Exciting to imagine….

Using stones to secure a stack of towels is a simple + lovely way to feel more grounded by your surroundings.

Dried Hydrangea flowers make the most beautiful displays. Amp up your cottage core aesthetic by placing them in an old metal lantern or other thrifted vintage vase. Let your Cottage Fairy vibes shine :).

Use sycamore tree bark to hold little nature trinkets you collect from the wild world and celebrate your beautiful connection with the earth.
