The Lovely + Luminous Luna Moth…

Let your soul connect you to the fairy magic, and may your days be enchanted by many luna moth encounters.

Scientifically, these beautiful beings are an important sign of a healthy ecosystem.  Spiritually, the same holds true. Their presence indicates harmony and environmental balance. They are symbols of the delicate relationship between humans and nature. Our interconnectedness with the wild world is strong and healthy in a place where Luna moths thrive. Lunas remind us of the importance of this, and seeing one reminds us of our connection to the natural world, and the mysterious + sweet reciprocal nature of our relationship to it.

Their short life span — a mere week, if that — adds to the mystery of their presence. Luna moths do not eat. Lacking any functional mouth,  they have only one week to find a mate and reproduce. This fleeting time is spent drifting on the gentle breezes of the star filled night.

The Lunas are also a symbol of longevity and encountering one is said to be good luck! The luminous glow of their green wings has been compared to the Moon, and thus it shares much of the same folklore as the moon.

Luna moths symbolize feminine energy and fertility. Being a creature of the night, these qualities tie in with the femininity of the Moon.

My most favorite folklore that spins around these beautiful beings is their association with the fairy realms. Indeed, they have been said to be messengers between humans and fairies.  Should you encounter a luna moth on a magical summer evening, make a wish… It will travel on the wings of the Luna back to the fae and be granted. Many old folk tales suggest that the Luna’s wings are made of fairy dust!

For all of these reasons, I am mystified by these beautiful beings and I find ways to incorporate them into my art as often as possible.

This past Autumn  a sweet client sent me some silk moth cocoons in hopes of inspiring me to paint them once they had hatched. I gently tended to them…trying to be a good moth mother; giving them their intermittent water spritzes and then tucking them back into their leaf home until they emerged in the Spring.

I could feel the life in them when I held them.  A gentle hum of energy. Little dreams of flowers and moonlight and stars  … codes of the cosmos falling into place.

Luna moths represent transformation, the divine feminine, spiritual enlightenment, inner guidance, intuition, adaptability, and connection with nature. Let the Luna’s help you remember your connection to the natural world. Let your intuition guide you to beauty and to your true north star.
